- Make sure door handle is inside unit and not under the door. Don’t give rodents a way into your unit.
- Be sure to store items you may need access to in the front of your unit.
- Store more valuable items to the back of your unit where they are not visible.
- Leave an aisle down the center that will give you better access to your items.
- Protect wood furniture with moving blankets.
- Add rodent deterrence products to your unit as a precaution.
- Don’t store food items of any kind.
- Don’t store items that are not replaceable.
- Don’t assume your homeowners insurance will cover your items. Call your insurance provider to ensure you are covered.
- Check your unit monthly or more often, if possible.
- Make a plan as of how you are going to pack your items. Utilize the space well.
- Disassemble items. It will save space. Put the hardware into a plastic bag and label it with a permanent marker.
- Make sure all appliances are clean and dry, to prevent mold and mildew. Leave the doors on the appliances slightly ajar to allow air passage and prevent condensation issues.
- Use plastic totes for fabric items.
- Drain fuel from lawn and other outdoor equipment. Unhook fuel from them before storing.
- Don’t store paint, gas, oil, propane, fireworks or any flammable items not mentioned.
- To prevent rust on metal objects, wipe them with a small amount of machine oil.
- Store mattresses and mirrors on edge not flat. Wrap mattresses to protect them.
- If storing a vehicle, place a piece of cardboard underneath to catch any oil or other fluids.
- Don’t provide your access code to others.
